Time-frequency scaling framework for downburst-like outflows: Challenges, full-scale validation, and prospects
M. Eissa, A. Elawady
Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 279, 106624 (2026)
A scaling framework that enforces similarity in both the time and frequency domains, so that full-scale downburst events can be reproduced consistently across experimental facilities and numerical simulations. The framework draws on a library of more than 500 velocity time histories and is validated against full-scale field records.

Aeroelastic response of undamaged and partially damaged transmission towers subjected to downburst-like outflows
M. Eissa, K. J. Alawode, A. Elawady
Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 270, 106357 (2026)
Power infrastructures encounter intensified weather-related events capable of causing widespread destruction and endangering the safety of residential communities in the USA and worldwide. This study investigates the wind-induced response of both damaged and undamaged transmission towers subjected to downburst-induced wind loads through experimental simulations conducted on 1:50 aeroelastic models at the Wall of Wind Experimental Facility. The structural damage, representing aging and exposure to successive extreme weather events, is introduced by removing specific members. Results indicate that structural damage increases the RMS acceleration responses by 86% in the along-wind direction and 74% in the across-wind direction, and that both towers exhibit non-quasi-static behavior under downburst wind loading.

PIV-based analysis of experimentally simulated downburst-like wall jet outflows in a large-scale experimental facility: Flow characterization and future perspectives
M. Eissa, A. Elawady, M. Burlando, M. P. Repetto
Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics, 85, 103956 (2026)
Three-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (3D-PIV) characterization of the downburst-like wall-jet outflow produced at the Wall of Wind, including the nose-shaped vertical profile, vertical wind component, flow angles, static pressure, and turbulence spectra. The study reframes downburst simulation around the flow parameters that critically influence wind loading and shows that the simulated flow falls within the ranges observed in the field and recommended in ASCE 49.

Performance of high-rise building façades under wind loading: A state-of-the-art review
M. Eissa, O. Metwally, K. J. Alawode, A. Elawady, G. Lori
Journal of Building Engineering, 113, 114072 (2025)
A state-of-the-art review of how high-rise building façades perform under wind loading, covering the building envelope, where much of the damage and cost from extreme winds occurs.

Aeroelastic testing of monopole mounted on a high-rise building under atmospheric boundary layer wind
M. Eissa, H. A. Ibrahim, A. Elawady
Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 264, 106149 (2025)
Aeroelastic wind tunnel tests showing that coupling with the across-wind vibration of a 166-m high-rise building can magnify the RMS across-wind forces at the tip of a roof-mounted monopole by up to 8.83 times, an effect current standards overlook.
